| The Girls Reach High Program is a leadership program directed to help teenage girls 13 to 18 years of age. The program focuses on personal and professional development through the use of individual and group therapy. An emphasis is placed on creating a positive future for the teens, their neighbors, and their community. The program further aims to improve the girls’ self-esteem by creating the desire for change and growth. This is accomplished by setting clearly defined career goals, stopping misbehavior, and increasing self and social responsibility. The program is implemented throughout the year so the girls will be able to accomplish the goals at their own pace. This program is held in Miami Beach and is funded by the Women’s Fund of Miami-Dade County. |

How does the counselor teach the topics? |
| |
| The counselor provides handouts with the topics, discussion ensues, and the group engages in activities for the day. They review the information together and the counselor uses examples to illustrate and make the topics clearer. In this manner, the girls are encouraged to relate to their personal life and share their experiences with the group. |

Does the program have to be carried out in group format? |
| |
| Not necessarily. The counselor provides group and individual therapy to the clients. Some girls feel more comfortable when they realize other girls of the same age have similar problems. Group format then becomes an indirect way to encourage them to share their experiences and become more open to learn and share. If one of the girls wishes to talk to the counselor individually, the counselor will provide the appropriate services. |
